Skills or certificates? Is the day of the certificate over? Why so many unemployed in the Bangladesh?
On the one hand, the number of unemployed is increasing. On the other hand, employers say there is a lack of qualified people. What is the point?
The unemployment problem. It is a very serious problem for the large population, the country, Bangladesh. The problem is more serious when among this huge unemployed population the number of educated people is high. A survey by BIDS has shown that the unemployment rate among the highly educated in Bangladesh is thirty-four percent at the post-graduate level and thirty-seven percent at the graduate level. In other words, if 300,000 people come out every year from various public and private universities of Bangladesh with bachelor's, master's and higher degrees, then almost half of them will remain unemployed.
Why so many highly educated young women with BSC, MSc, BBA, MBA, BA, MS certificate are going unemployed at the end of the day. Yes, it is true that there is not enough employment system in our country as opposed to job seekers. But when many of the highly educated people are unemployed in our country, many people from neighboring countries are working in different sectors of Bangladesh for high salary. What is the number of foreigners working in Bangladesh? You will be surprised to know that about one million foreigners are currently working in multinational companies including various companies in the country, most of whom are high-ranking officials. The salary of each of them is equal to the salary of five Bangladeshi officials or in some cases more than that. It is true that there is a lack of employment, but why are our highly educated unemployed women not getting opportunities even there.
certificate? Or skills? If we say that we have to fall behind only because of lack of skills. The education that the youth of Bangladesh are getting in schools and colleges is not fully preparing them for working life.
The reason for this is that Bangladesh's current education system is far behind other neighboring countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and even Bhutan in terms of technical and communications skills and strategic work management. The number of actual graduates in China in 2020 was slightly more than forty two million. If you think about it, it can be understood that the rate of higher education in our country is not less than that of China. But look at the difference. A survey jointly conducted by non-governmental organization BRAC, BIGD and BRAC University showed that only sixteen percent of students in Bangladesh are confident in computers and English language. Research reports that only fourteen percent of young women have received technical training. Again, the rate of skilled youth is 24 percent, that is, the rate of women's computer skills is only 10 percent. On the other hand, only twenty one percent of young people are advanced in English language skills. Whereas the rate of this language proficiency of women is only fourteen percent. Let's briefly say here that there are several institutions on skill development in Bangladesh. But there are also questions about the role of educational institutions in Bangladesh in making them skilled. According to a report by Dailystar, seventy percent of the country's students feel that their educational institutions have not contributed much to preparing them for the job market. Or they are not sure about this.
Again, seventy-five percent of the students have a negative opinion on the question of how helpful their curriculum is to face the challenges of the 21st century. Also there are many departments in the universities of the country for which there is literally no job provision. Curriculum of our education system or lab facilities are not updated with the times. However, according to Professor Bill Cashel of the Rocker School of Management and Labor Relations in the United States, all organizations are focusing on technical skills, thinking about future needs. And these skills are not certificates. Diligence and initiative are required. The job market is changing with time. Skills required are changing.
According to the World Economic Forum, within the next decade, more than one billion jobs worldwide, i.e. almost a third of the global job market, will be controlled by technology. Recently, the World Economic Forum mentioned in their report that the top technical skills that companies will be hiring in the workplace in the next 22 years are big analytics, machine learning, cloud computing, etc. . Because the changes in the educational program that were needed considering the needs of the workplace were not possible in most cases.
What industries will need people in the next ten years and what kind of skills will we need? Whether automation is being kept in mind here, we will make a separate episode about automation. Is the certificate just social status? No it is a self-identification. At one time a degree or certification was considered a license to prove oneself.
Some people think that any employer will consider you only if you have a degree or certification. Can't see that anymore. Rather, if you don't have the necessary skills, you can't do anything. Interestingly, about 57.5 percent of bachelor's degree holders worldwide do not find their education useful in their careers, says Linking's CEO Jack Wiener. How did you acquire your skills then? But that's not the point. A few years ago, a report revealed that fifty percent of the employees hired by Apple Computer Inc., a famous American technology company, did not have a bachelor's degree. In an interview with not only Apple but also the New York Times, Lazlu Bock, Google's vice president of human resources, said that the number of Google workers without a formal degree is slowly increasing. Fourteen percent of employees on some Google teams have no formal degree.
But the young generation of Bangladesh is now more updated than before. They are also regularly trying to go beyond academic education. Make yourself competent. Some of them try on their own after finishing the university and some of them resort to different skill development institutions if they are unable to benefit by trying on their own. In a country like Bangladesh where there is no up-to-date education system and there is no opportunity for school development from educational institutions, skill development institutions like various IT institutes can play an important role. Founders of famous organizations have written their names in this list of drop outs like Microsoft's Bill Gates, Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, Twitter's Jack Dorsey, Dell's Michael Dell, Uber's Travis, WhatsApp's Jane Kam. So it is easy to guess why degree is not very important from them. In other words, it will be seen in the future that only those who have technical skills will get good jobs, but how many degrees will not be considered at all.
